\nFrom a male perspective, it was a somewhat confusing tale and a little bit all over the place emotionally though I suspect that is exactly what the author intended. The omnipresent wish of a young woman to be liked or loved by the other players – adult and child – was a little foreign to me or possibly something I have forgotten about my own childhood. Maybe I was fortunate and got on pretty well with most and walked away cleanly from others. I suspect there are elements of gender involved but it is difficult to assess with a sample of one.
The writing is very proficient and the scene setting and characterizations are evocative and clearly very personal.
While not a book I would have chosen to read outside of an academic course it was an interesting insight into the complexity of a mind (not necessarily female) but one worthy of understanding and appreciating. Maybe mothers and daughters should read it and then discuss.\n
